What is LASIK?
LASIK (Laser In Situ Keratomileusis) is a surgical procedure to correct refractive errors, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It utilizes an Excimer Laser to reshape the curvature of the cornea, allowing light to focus more accurately on the retina.
Treatable Refractive Errors
Nearsightedness (Myopia)
Nearsightedness, or myopia, is a common vision impairment. People with nearsightedness have difficulty seeing distant objects clearly, while nearby objects remain sharp. This condition occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved.
Farsightedness or Hyperopia
Farsightedness, or Hyperopia, is a condition where near vision is blurred, while distant objects can be seen clearly. In some cases, vision may be blurred at both near and far distances. This condition is typically caused by a cornea that is too flat.
Presbyopia
Presbyopia is a condition characterized by blurred near vision, caused by the gradual weakening of the eye muscles and the hardening of the lens. It is commonly found in individuals aged 40 and above.
Astigmatism
Astigmatism is a condition where vision has more than one focal point, resulting in blurred or distorted vision. LASIK for astigmatism reshapes the cornea to restore light refraction to a near-normal state.
Types of LASIK Procedures
Femto LASIK
Femto LASIK is a bladeless LASIK procedure that treats nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It uses a laser to create the corneal flap instead of a blade, followed by another laser to reshape the cornea.
This method is highly safe and precise; after the procedure, vision typically returns to normal quickly.
SBK LASIK
SBK LASIK is a treatment for nearsightedness, astigmatism, and farsightedness from birth. It uses a Microkeratome blade to create a corneal flap, followed by an Excimer Laser to reshape the cornea to correct vision abnormalities.
Post-procedure, there is a lower risk of dry eye compared to traditional LASIK.
Trans PRK
Trans PRK is a surgical procedure to correct vision without creating a corneal flap. The process involves using a laser to remove the outer layer of the cornea and then reshaping its curvature to correct the refractive error, without any direct contact with the eye.
This method is suitable for individuals with insufficient corneal thickness for LASIK or those in specialized professions such as military personnel, police officers, and pilots, as well as those concerned about corneal flap complications.
After the procedure, you may experience eye irritation and tearing for approximately 3–5 days, and your vision will gradually improve within 1–4 weeks.
Treatment Technology
Alcon WaveLight EX500
Alcon WaveLight EX500 is an Excimer Laser machine from ALCON, Germany. It is used for vision correction with a special technology that preserves more corneal tissue, enhancing the chances of success and the strength of the cornea after surgery.
This machine takes approximately 1.4 seconds per -1.00 D to treat vision, featuring an Eye Tracking System that detects and follows eye movement for precise correction, as well as technology to reduce night glare.
Alcon WaveLight FS200
The Alcon WaveLight FS200 is the latest Femtosecond Laser technology from Alcon, used for corneal flap creation in Femto LASIK procedures in conjunction with Excimer Laser technology for vision correction.
The blade-free treatment process enhances the opportunity for vision correction, as it can create a thinner corneal flap than blade LASIK, resulting in smooth edges and rapid corneal surface healing.
Oculus Corvis ST
Oculus Corvis ST is a tool used to measure corneal strength. It utilizes a Scheimpflug camera to capture corneal movement during measurement and integrates this data with the eye's physical characteristics, including corneal elasticity, for evaluation.
This tool can help screen for high-risk conditions, such as early-stage keratoconus.
Benefits of LASIK
-
Provides clear vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses.
-
Reduce the risk of contact lens use
-
Minimal pain and fast recovery
-
High safety and accuracy
-
Helps build confidence in daily life
-
It is a permanent solution for correcting vision abnormalities.
Suitable Candidates for LASIK Treatment
ผู้Candidates for LASIK should have the following qualifications:
-
Aged 18 years and above with a stable prescription for at least 1 year
-
No corneal diseases, such as keratoconus, severe dry eyes, or other eye conditions such as macular degeneration.
-
No physical diseases that affect wound healing, such as SLE, dry eyes and dry mouth or Sjogren's Syndrome, including other diseases related to immunodeficiency.
-
Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
-
Have a thorough understanding of LASIK surgery and maintain realistic expectations.
Preparing for LASIK Treatment
Before undergoing a LASIK evaluation or procedure, you should prepare as follows:
-
Stop wearing soft contact lenses for at least 5 days, and hard or semi-rigid contact lenses for at least 14 days prior to the evaluation.
-
On the day of the surgery, please shower and wash your hair. Do not wear makeup, and refrain from using sprays, deodorants, or perfumes.
-
Wear a front-buttoning shirt or one that is easy to remove for convenience when changing after surgery.
If you take any regular medication, please consult your doctor on the day of your check-up to determine if any medication should be discontinued. -
Refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages before surgery.
-
On the day of your evaluation and surgery, we do not recommend driving yourself, as the evaluation process may involve pupil dilation, which can result in blurred vision for approximately 4–6 hours.
-
Discontinue acne medication for at least 1 month prior to your eye examination and surgery date, as the medication may cause dry eyes and lead to inaccurate vision assessment results.
Post-LASIK Care Instructions
After undergoing LASIK, you should follow these instructions:
-
Rest your eyes during the first 24 hours after surgery.
-
Avoid getting water or foreign objects in your eyes during the first 7 days.
-
Refrain from exercise for 7 days after the procedure
-
Refrain from applying makeup and eye products for 7 days after the procedure.
-
Wear an eye shield during sleep for 7 days post-procedure to prevent accidental eye rubbing.
-
Get adequate rest
-
Apply eye drops as instructed by your physician.
-
Wear sunglasses when outdoors for approximately 1–4 weeks.
Step towards clearer vision
LASIK surgery is an option for those who want to reduce their reliance on glasses or contact lenses and increase their convenience in daily life. However, patients should undergo a thorough eye examination before LASIK surgery so that the doctor can determine the most suitable treatment method for each individual.
